Spectrometry-Analytical dissection of compounds

As time has passed over the years and with the advancement in knowledge and technology, all sciences including chemistry has witnessed major changes. Gone are the days when scientists would completely rely on stones and magic to not only learn about elements and compounds, but also to change elements and compounds into various metals and objects. With the advancement in technology, scientists can now not only study elements and compounds regularly, but also abstract, dissect and even experiment with them frequently. In fact, nowadays, there are many different types of techniques, equipment and gadgets that help scientists and individuals to easily conduct experiments and analyze compounds and elements in minutes rather than months.
One of the most popular and common techniques that is frequently used by scientists nowadays is the graphite furnace atomic absorption technique.  Although, this technique is quite similar to the atomic absorption spectrometer technique as it works on the principle of light, it primarily uses graphite to analyze the compounds and elements. In this technique, scientists often heat the graphite refractory at high temperatures so that it can emit atoms, which are later analyzed. However in the atomic absorption technique, scientists use light and monochromatic waves to analyze compounds. While, both the techniques can effectively provide analysis of compounds, the graphite technique provides more clearer and accurate results. The only drawback of this technique is that it is quite time consuming as it can only analyze five to six compounds at a stretch.
Another common gadget that is frequently used by scientists is the mercury analyzer. This gadget is primarily used by companies working in the sewage treatment segment and by various petrochemical refineries. With this device, individuals can easily identify the presence of high levels of mercury in gas or liquid streams, thereby, enabling the individual to remove any excess mercury present in sludge or crude oil. In the test of mercury levels, the samples are first placed within a sampling tube and are then treated with thermal and chemicals, which leads to identifying the levels of mercury. The entire process is often known as Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. By identifying and removing high levels of mercury, companies also prevent various side-effects, such as ailments and poisoning from occurring in human beings and also protect the rivers and oceans from becoming contaminated. It is for this reason that mercury analyzers have become so popular among various companies in today’s world.

Application of Intrinsic Techniques in Chromatography Process

Chromatography is an extremely dated technique which was started a couple of centuries back. The techniques for separation were not developed during the older days. Even mixtures of basic nature were separated by filter papers and pebbles. Moreover, no data on complex mixtures existed as they were believed to be inseparable. However, the use of high-end machines have made many things possible in the present times. Sample analyzing machines will separate chemicals of even the most detailed nature and give layout within seconds.
An advanced form of infrared spectroscopy is FTIR. Although the collection of data is the same as infra-red spectroscopy in this method, the analysis is executed differently. The sample is first exposed to light beams of varying wavelengths as well as waveforms. Then, the light subjected sample is analyzed for changes after a specified time period.
There are many forms of analyzers which are used for research and improvements. While several others like the mercury analyzer can help to save life forms. This analyzer is capable of giving the mercury concentration in any type of water body, whether it is an eco system or a human life. Actually, mercury is extremely toxic, just like lead is. Moreover, if it is present more than normal level, it means death. Industrial sewage outlets usually dump these toxic chemicals in water bodies. Despite laws being passed to stop this menace, it is still carried out in remote parts of the globe. Another beneficial helper here is high performance liquid chromatograph which can provide a cure along with analysis. With assistance from HPCL, vital combinations can be analyzed and tested on patients. Thus, chromatography and spectral techniques have spread far and wide. Numerous applications

Importance of chemical analysis in identifying elements in compounds

Since centuries, man has been taking keen interest in compounds, elements and their nature. They want to know how they came into existence and how they react with each other. This gave rise to the concept of chemistry. The name has originated from Arabic word “alchemy” which literally means spells and enchantments. It is believed that in alchemy, it is quite possible to change all the metals to gold and there is an elixir which can make you immortal.
With the passage of time, man not only experimented with reactions between different compounds and substances but began to analyze every single element present in the chemical substances. To attain this purpose, it was important to create powerful machines and tools as atoms are present at microscopic levels. Working with them requires some quantitative techniques that can assist in looking into the matter form.
This gave birth to analyzing devices like Atomic absorption spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph that helped chemist to research the compounds and understand how they are made.
Atomic absorption spectrometer works on the principle of the absorption of lights by elements in the compound. At first, a known element or compound is put under observation to watch the amount of radiation it absorbs. The compound under question is kept under analysis. Afterwards, the amount of light absorbed by this unknown compound is noted. After the completion of this process, Beer-lamberts law is used to create a relationship among two using the formula. Finally, the unknown compound or element is obtained.
Gas chromatograph is another technique for analysis where two phases are involved namely, gas phase and liquid phase. The gas phase is mobile while liquid is kept stationary. The compound under analysis is superheated to obtain a gaseous mixture of elements. This mixture is later allowed to pass through a glass column that is coated in the inner wall with liquid stationary phase. After the gas passes through the column, each and every element occupies a space at some point of the tube. The elements can be dissected and analyzed properly using this compound. These techniques have been accepted widely. It is because of the advancement of science whereby it has become possible to simplify chemistry to elemental and atomic levels. If these devices were not present, it would have been difficult to get the inventions and advancements right on time.

Types and concept behind High Pressure liquid chromatography

Chromatography has long been an useful and important asset to chemistry and it operates on the simple principle of color, be it light, heat or chemical reactions the methods may differ but the basic concept remains the same. Chromatography is usually two types; one involves analytical procedure wherein you just analyze the mixture and record the contents, the other is separation procedure where the mixture of elements is separated from a compound. Chromatography process has become lightening fast unlike the olden methods which used to take days and even months to finish.
High pressure liquid chromatograph otherwise called as High Performance Liquid Chromatograph is being widely used by various applications and the purpose of this chromatography technique is to separate the mixtures. The process involves a mobile phase with which the sample is mixed and sent in to a tube packed with several types of stationary phases which are usually adsorbents.
Variety of HPLC techniques are available, the basic and well known techniques is paper chromatography which is a type of partition chromatography. In this type, the sample is introduced as a droplet in the centre of the paper; note that sample is mixed with a mobile phase before it is placed.
High performance liquid chromatography is named so since this technique has provided good results and is much more faster than other normal chromatography techniques; mainly due to the reason that it is forced and not natural but yet never fails to deliver what exactly is needed.
